Before going into quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Puerto Rico was hit by two consecutive and devastating hurricanes and by two destructive earthquaques in January 2020. After 30 months of continuous stress, children and youth in Puerto Rico have lost an estimated total of six months of class. Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico has stepped up quickly to support participants and their families, designing a virtual club experience that is as close to the club experience as possible.
The health crisis caused by Coronavirus (COVID-19) reached Puerto Rico after two devastating hurricanes in 2017 and two destructive earthquakes just 10 weeks ago. As positive cases started emerging, on March 15, 2020, the Governor issued an executive order of mandatory quarantine. During difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, children who spend too much time out of school can loose a significant amount of the knowledge acquired in class.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico (BGCPR) provides a safe place for children and youth living in poverty to develop to their full potential. Every year, more than 15,000 participants and their families receive educational enrichment, nutritious hot meals, leadership development programs, careers guidance and family support during after-school hours from 11 Clubs across Puerto Rico. For more than 50 years, community residents trust BGCPR as a reliable service provider who adapts to their needs.
