In rural Nigeria, many female teachers travel long distances on foot to reach their schools, spending up to 3 hours daily on unsafe paths. This leads to fatigue, lateness, and in some cases, teachers leaving their jobs. Our project will provide 170 bicycles to female teachers, reducing travel time, improving attendance, and allowing them to devote more time to teaching. With better transport, teachers can remain in rural schools and improve education access for thousands of children.
In many rural Nigerian villages, schools are located far from teachers' homes, often 5-10 km away. Female teachers frequently walk these long distances under harsh weather conditions. This daily struggle leads to exhaustion, late arrival, absenteeism, and sometimes school dropouts when teachers leave for less demanding jobs. Without safe and reliable transport, children in these villages lose access to consistent education and female teachers face extra burdens.
Providing 170 bicycles to female teachers will shorten their travel time, allowing them to arrive on time, teach longer hours, and reduce fatigue. Each bicycle will be paired with basic repair training and a toolkit to keep it in use. Safety helmets and vests will protect teachers on rural roads. With bicycles, teachers will remain in rural schools, improving student attendance and learning, while also inspiring young girls to value education.
With improved mobility, female teachers will stay longer in rural schools, strengthening education for thousands of children. Reliable teacher presence boosts school attendance and learning quality. The bicycles will also encourage gender inclusion in education by supporting female teachers who serve as role models for girls. Over time, communities benefit from better-educated children who can pursue brighter futures, reducing poverty and promoting stability in rural areas.
