Books on wheels - Bikes on the go!

By Amna Hassan Kazmi | CEO

Introduction The Book Bike Library continues to be one of the most impactful community outreach initiatives of Alif Laila Book Bus Society. It primarily serves nearby communities that have little or no access to books, reading spaces, or educational opportunities. The Book Bike has developed its own dedicated audience, especially among younger children, as the majority of the books are designed for early readers. Over this quarter, the program has successfully provided regular reading engagement and created joyful and meaningful learning experiences for children in underserved neighborhoods. Program Overview 1. Frequency and Reach • The Cycle Library operates twice a week across selected communities. • Each visit engages 10 to 15 children, depending on attendance and location. • Over the quarter, the program reached approximately 280–300 children, ensuring consistent exposure to books, storytelling, and guided reading activities. 2. Activities and Engagement Reading Sessions The librarian reads stories aloud, pausing to explain new vocabulary, ask comprehension questions, and encourage discussion. This approach strengthens children’s vocabulary, comprehension, and listening skills. Interactive Storytelling Stories are delivered with expression, props, and animation, encouraging children to actively participate, make predictions, and share their ideas. Popular stories such as “Ramo Kaha Gaya” and “Aha Bara Mazedar” are selected based on children’s interests. Culturally relatable stories help maintain excitement and deepen their connection to reading. Puppet Shows and Creative Engagement Puppet shows and interactive elements enhance the storytelling experience, making learning more engaging and memorable for children. Children’s Reflections Children regularly express excitement and a strong connection with the Cycle Library: • Hania: “I like to read fairy tale books.” She has become more confident and eager to explore new stories. • Faris Ali: Enjoys spending time with friends and likes the fun storytelling style. He shows increasing engagement during sessions. • Shanzy: “I love listening to stories with props.” She enjoys visual learning and interactive storytelling. • Madeeha: “I enjoy puppet shows with my friends.” She looks forward to the sessions and enjoys culturally meaningful stories. Impact on Children Key Outcomes • Improved Reading Skills: Children who previously had no access to books are now practicing reading regularly with guidance. • Higher Engagement: A combination of storytelling, puppet shows, and discussions keeps children motivated and curious. • Increased Enthusiasm: Many children eagerly wait for the Cycle Library each week, showing its importance in their lives. Parent Feedback Parents consistently appreciate the initiative and report that their children: • Show increased interest in reading at home • Retell stories they heard during sessions • Participate more actively in school • Demonstrate greater confidence and curiosity in learning Challenges and Solutions (This Quarter) Challenge: School-going children were affected due to temporary school closures caused by unavoidable circumstances and increased fuel costs, which impacted regular attendance. Solution: • Adjusted visit timings to better suit children’s availability • Introduced indoor or shaded setups (community spaces) • Communicated schedules in advance through local volunteers • Utilized school holidays by engaging children in productive learning activities • Encouraged volunteer support to enhance engagement and continuity Conclusion The Book Bike Library continues to play a vital role in promoting literacy, creativity, and confidence among children who have limited access to educational resources. This quarter’s progress highlights the program’s impact through children’s enthusiasm, positive parent feedback, and strong community engagement. The initiative is also strengthening relationships between the community and children, fostering a culture of learning and shared growth. With continued donor support, Alif Laila Book Bus Society remains committed to expanding this meaningful initiative and reaching even more children—ensuring they have the opportunity
