El-Charis Initiative for Africa intend the bridge this gap by providing block granting of curriculum-based books to schools in the state. 6 secondary school libraries are targeted for this pilot. A container load of books (containing approximately one million books) has been donated by a UK Charity Books2Africa to El-Charis Initiative for this purpose. Our request is for support with cost for haulage, port clearance, and presentation ceremonies which has been put at $16,075.
An estimated 13.2 million children are out of school. The illiteracy level is very high, and the challenges of infrastructural deficit and decay, unqualified teachers, and inadequate instructional materials are complication the woes of the education system. High rate of poverty in the state has made it difficult for parents/guardians to provide their ward with basic text books and other textual materials required for effective learning. Most affected are orphans and vulnerable children.
El-Charis Block Granting of Text Books to School Libraries aims to provide critical textual material (curriculum-based books) to secondary schools in the state. This project will improve school attendance and performance among students in public schools, also scale up school completion rate. Teachers will have appropriate resources for referencing and teaching. This will ease the burden on indigent parents and reduce stigma against orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).
Books will shape and hone young people's imaginations, critical thinking skills, and their understanding of the world, and are powerful tools to combat poverty and inspire positive, long-lasting change, entrepreneurial development as well as self actualization.
