Introduction
Access to quality educational resources continues to be a major challenge for children living in rural areas of Sri Lanka. Recognizing this gap, we launched the Book Donation Project to support underprivileged school children by providing essential reading materials. The initiative aims to foster a love for reading while improving learning opportunities and literacy among young students.
Objective
The primary objective of the project was to distribute essential educational books to rural school students, thereby enhancing their access to learning materials and encouraging continuous reading habits.
Project Implementation
In October 2025, we successfully completed the distribution of 80 book packs containing textbooks, storybooks, and supplementary learning materials. The beneficiary schools were carefully selected in collaboration with local education authorities and community leaders to ensure that the support reached the most deserving students.
Activities Conducted
Identification of Beneficiary Schools
Partnered with local officials to identify rural schools in need of educational support.
Preparation of Book Lists
Curated essential book lists aligned with the national curriculum and students’ grade levels.
Procurement of Books
Purchased books from local publishers and bookstores to promote local business engagement.
Distribution of Books
Delivered and distributed the books directly to schools through an organized handover process, ensuring that each student received the full set of materials.
Challenges
Difficult accessibility to certain remote schools due to poor road infrastructure.
Logistical challenges in transporting books safely during adverse weather conditions, particularly the rainy season.
Despite these obstacles, the project was successfully completed within the planned timeframe.
Future Plans
Building on the success of this year’s initiative, we plan to make the Book Donation Project an annual event and extend its reach to more schools in different districts.
Future phases will also include:
Reading and learning workshops to guide students and teachers on effective use of the donated materials.
Community engagement activities to promote and sustain a reading culture among children.
Conclusion
The Book Donation Project 2025 made a meaningful contribution to improving educational access and nurturing a passion for learning among rural schoolchildren. With continued community and donor support, we aim to empower more young minds and strengthen education in underprivileged areas across Sri Lanka.
