New librarian to help the children read!

Reading with the children
Reading with the children

Your generous donations have led to two wonderful developments at the Picaflor House Community Outreach Project:

  1. The establishment of a new library space, and the hiring of a new librarian to manage the library and to help the children with their reading and homework.
  2. We were able to buy over 120 books for the library, books of a wide range and variety for the children to enjoy and learn from. The library includes books on history, art, fantasy, science, biology, languages, and even interactive books. This combination of books allows us to strike a balance between fun and learning with the children.

Speaking to Oscar, Project Manager at the Picaflor House, any future donations would be used to buy bookshelves to house more books, buy more books of different genres, and duplicates of books so that more children can have access to the same books during classes to read together.

Libraries in rural Peru serve a critical need for children to improve literacy and contribute to their overall educational development. Here are several reasons why libraries are essential for children in rural areas to enhance literacy:

  • Access to Books: Libraries provide access to a wide range of books, including age-appropriate materials and children's literature. This access is often limited in rural areas, and libraries help bridge this gap.
  • Promotion of Reading: Libraries promote a culture of reading. By making books readily available, libraries encourage children to read for pleasure, which is essential for improving literacy.
  • Storytelling and Reading Programs: Many rural libraries host storytelling sessions and reading programs for children. These activities not only make reading enjoyable but also help improve comprehension and language skills.
  • Homework and Study Support: Libraries often offer a quiet and conducive environment for studying and completing homework. This support can be crucial for children who may not have such resources at home.
  • Educational Resources: In addition to books, libraries provide access to educational resources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and educational software, which can aid in language development and research for school projects.
  • Literacy Programs: Libraries may offer specialized literacy programs aimed at improving reading and writing skills in children, especially for those who may be struggling with literacy.
  • Language Development: Libraries can support children in bilingual or multilingual communities by offering books in various languages, thereby promoting language development and preserving cultural and linguistic diversity.

In summary, libraries in rural Peru are a valuable resource for children to improve their literacy skills. They offer a range of materials, programs, and support that can help children develop strong reading and writing abilities, which are fundamental for their academic success and personal growth. These libraries play a significant role in leveling the educational playing field for children in rural areas.

We want to express how much gratitude we have for the generosity of our donors to allow the program to continue.
