Expanding Literacy and Empowerment in the Andes

Quillahuata celebrating mobile library's return
Quillahuata celebrating mobile library's return

While our Mobile Library experienced a brief period of inactivity at the beginning of the year, we are thrilled to announce that the project has been powerfully reactivated. Thanks to the vital and generous support of the New Zealand Embassy for Chile, Peru and Bolivia, we have not only restarted our journeys but have formally expanded our reach into the beautiful, underserved rural communities of Quillahuata and Pumamarka.

During the brief operational pause, our team worked tirelessly behind the scenes conducting strategic coordinations with local municipalities, community leaders, and school directors across Quillahuata, Pumamarka, Corao, and Kallarayan. This collaborative foundation ensures that our return is deeply integrated with local educational goals, allowing us to serve as a trusted partner for families across the region.

Transforming the SuperVan into a Mobile Digital Hub
Our newly acquired Changan SuperVan is taking on an even greater mission this semester. In addition to being stocked with an expanded library of physical books, the vehicle is officially being equipped as a mobile technology laboratory.

The van will now transport laptop computers directly into the heart of Quillahuata, Pumamarka and Corao, effectively bridging the digital divide for more than 100 rural children. For many of these students, this will be their very first time interacting with a computer, transforming our vehicle into a rolling gateway to the modern digital world.

Deepening the Impact of Every Page
We utilized our recent reflection period to completely evaluate, update, and elevate our educational methodologies. To foster a deeper, lifelong connection to learning, our refined curriculum now integrates specialized elements from renowned educational frameworks:

  • Montessori and Waldorf Approaches: Cultivating autonomous, self-directed exploration and a creative, holistic love for reading.
  • Isabel Solé’s Reading Strategies: Equipping children with concrete tools for active text comprehension before, during, and after reading.
  • David Ausubel’s Meaningful Learning: Ensuring new concepts are deeply tied to the students' prior knowledge and cultural backgrounds.

To fully support this methodological evolution, we have upgraded our evaluation systems and acquired a wealth of new educational materials, including interactive books, specialized stationery for creative arts, a brand new projector, and innovative multimedia learning tools.

Broadening Horizons Through Women’s Empowerment
Backed by the New Zealand Embassy funding, we are launching a semester long program featuring weekly workshops tailored specifically for girls and adolescents aged 12 to 16. Led by an experienced psychologist specializing in adolescence, these safe spaces focus on building self esteem, promoting gender equity, exploring vocational paths, and providing vital guidance on family planning and sexual health education.

Bridging the Digital Divide with Computer Classes
To equip rural youth with indispensable modern skills, our mobile classroom now features a structured digital literacy curriculum. Led by a specialized technology instructor, children are learning foundational computer operations alongside essential programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. We are also investing in educational software and digital applications designed to stimulate literacy, mathematics, and cognitive development through interactive resources.

Fostering Safe Environments with Positive Parenting
Because a child's education thrives in a safe home, we are introducing monthly workshops for parents. These sessions provide families with communication tools and positive discipline strategies to eliminate verbal, physical, or emotional violence. Crucially, these workshops run parallel to our women's empowerment tracks, helping rural families openly discuss and deconstruct historical gender inequities and machismo, which traditionally marginalize young women from higher education and confine them to early domestic labor.

The Grand Opening in Quillahuata
Our launch in the community of Quillahuata was an overwhelming success, drawing a highly enthusiastic crowd of over 35 primary school children and 12 adolescent girls eager to join the empowerment program. The inaugural ceremony was celebrated alongside the community leader and authorities from the San Sebastián municipality.

The afternoon was filled with laughter and collaborative energy. The children engaged in group reading circles, interactive comprehension games, and creative art sessions for our youngest learners. To celebrate this beautiful milestone, the community gathered for a joyous "compartir," sharing delicious cakes and refreshments to mark the return of their beloved library. In follow up sessions, the children have already begun practicing active reading comprehension by creating vibrant drawings and group collages, bringing stories to life through theatrical storytelling alongside their teacher.

Preparing for Pumamarka
The spirit of anticipation is moving fast through the community of Pumamarka, located just 25 minutes outside Cusco city in the breathtaking Sacred Valley region. Our team has completed extensive community promotion and socialization sessions, receiving immense support from local leaders and municipal educational authorities.

With more than 35 students already officially registered and waiting, the Mobile Library is preparing to launch its full suite of services in Pumamarka over the coming days, introducing our combined reading tracks, computer classes, and women's empowerment workshops to a community eager for opportunity.

A Heartfelt Thank You
The Mobile Library is far more than a vehicle, it is a moving sanctuary of hope, technology, and equity traveling across the Andean peaks. Whether you have supported our digital lab, funded our specialized workshops, or contributed to our collection of books, you are helping us rewrite the future for the children of Cusco.

Thank you for keeping our wheels turning and our pages turning.
