Reading & Creative Play at the Mobile Library

We are thrilled to share the latest updates on our Mobile Library program, which continues to grow and positively impact children in rural Cusco. With 94 children now enrolled across three communities. For many of these children, the Mobile Library has become a cherished part of their weekends, offering a dedicated space to develop their reading skills while enjoying time with friends.

Each week, our dedicated teachers arrive with a captivating story and an engaging activity, sparking joy and enthusiasm among the children. These stories do more than entertain—they inspire creativity, expand young imaginations, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading. In areas where access to the internet and educational resources is scarce, this initiative plays a crucial role in broadening learning opportunities.

Important Literacy Skills

This initiative not only enhances literacy skills but also fosters a culture of learning beyond the classroom. We have seen firsthand how this opportunity empowers children to explore stories on their own and share their discoveries with siblings and friends.

Parental engagement remains an ongoing challenge, but our team works tirelessly to demonstrate the long-term value of literacy through interactive sessions. These activities range from storytelling and drawing to pronunciation games and reading practice. The anticipation of what each new session will bring keeps the children eager and excited to participate.

Three Sister Stories

A heartwarming example comes from the community of Kallarayan, where three sisters—Saywa, Jimena, and Sonia—attend the Mobile Library every Saturday morning. Saywa, the eldest, has a deep love for stories about animals, particularly those that reflect the mountainous landscapes of their home. Over the past year, her younger sisters have shown remarkable progress in their reading and pronunciation skills, thanks to the unwavering support of our teachers. During a recent session, they had the opportunity to design their own bookmarks. Sonia, the youngest, was delighted to learn how to mix different shades of pink—her favorite color—to personalize her creation.

Challenges

Many of the children who participate in the Mobile Library balance their education with household and economic responsibilities from a young age. For them, this program is more than just a reading session—it is a valuable opportunity to continue learning, exploring, and imagining beyond the limits of their daily routines.

Thanks to your generous support, we are able to bring the joy of reading to these children and create a lasting impact on their education. Your contributions help sustain and expand this vital program, ensuring that more children in rural Cusco can experience the transformative power of books.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. We look forward to sharing more stories of growth and success with you soon.
