Project Report: Strengthening Organ Donation and Transplantation in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Supporting healthcare professionals to improve access to life-saving transplantation

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, as in many countries, patients with end-stage organ failure face important challenges when access to transplantation is limited. Developing a strong donation and transplantation system requires trained professionals, hospital coordination, clear clinical pathways, institutional commitment, and public trust.

During this reporting period, DTI Foundation has continued supporting the development of professional knowledge and technical capacity in the field of organ donation and transplantation. Our work focuses on sharing international best practices, promoting specialized training, and encouraging the implementation of effective models that can be adapted to the local healthcare context.

The objective of this project is to contribute to the improvement of donation and transplantation activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina by strengthening the skills of healthcare professionals involved in the donation process. Training and knowledge transfer are essential to help professionals identify potential donors, improve donor management, communicate effectively with families, and coordinate the different steps of the donation and transplantation pathway.

Progress in this field requires time, continuity, and collaboration between healthcare institutions, professionals, and international partners. Each activity carried out under this project represents an important step toward building local capacity and supporting the long-term development of donation and transplantation practices.

The expected impact goes beyond individual training. Professionals who receive specialized education can become local references, share their knowledge with colleagues, and contribute to the gradual strengthening of hospital and national practices. This multiplier effect is central to DTI Foundation’s mission: saving lives through education, cooperation, and sustainable capacity building.

DTI Foundation Activity Report
Bosnia and Herzegovina

DTI Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Barcelona that works internationally to strengthen organ donation and transplantation systems through training and capacity building.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, DTI Foundation has supported initiatives aimed at improving professional training in organ donation and transplantation. The main activity has focused on providing specialized education for healthcare professionals involved in donor detection and transplant coordination.

Through the GlobalGiving project “Bosnia and Herzegovina – Save 1 Million Lives”, DTI facilitated the participation of a healthcare professional from Bosnia and Herzegovina in advanced training in Spain. The participant attended the Advanced TPM (Transplant Procurement Management) course, an international training program developed by DTI, and completed a two-week clinical internship in a Spanish transplant center.

The objective of this initiative was to strengthen the professional capacity of local healthcare staff and support the development of organ donation practices within the country’s healthcare system.

These activities contribute to the transfer of knowledge and practical experience from established transplant systems to emerging programs, helping local professionals promote and develop organ donation and transplantation activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
