Bosnia and Herzegovina has a population of approximately 3.3 million, yet the country faces a disproportionately high burden of patients requiring renal replacement therapy. GlobalGiving data report that more than 2,600 patients are currently on dialysis, while over 240 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, along with around 30 patients waiting for a liver transplant and 12 for a heart transplant.
Although transplant coordinators have been appointed in several hospitals, most have not received specialised training, which severely limits the country’s ability to identify donors, approach families and organise donation processes efficiently. Strengthening the professional capacity in donation is a prerequisite for reducing waiting lists and improving patient outcomes.
DTI Foundation’s project provides a solution by offering advanced TPM training and a two-week internship in Spain to one Bosnian healthcare professional. Through practical exposure and structured education, the participant develops essential skills in:
• donor detection and evaluation
• communication and family support
• clinical donor management
• hospital coordination and organ allocation pathways
When this professional returns home, they become an asset for their hospital and their country, supporting the development of donation protocols and mentoring other healthcare workers.
Your donation plays a crucial role in helping Bosnia and Herzegovina strengthen its donation network. Each contribution supports a more ethical, efficient and lifesaving system for patients on waiting lists.
