A New Elephant Workshop for Kids!

This quarter, we enthusiastically collaborated on the development and deployment of a new workshop, with the assistance of EfA intern Mary. Designed to be interactive and fun, this workshop targeted primary school students, offering a comprehensive look into various elephant-related subjects. The students embraced the workshop, demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm and engagement throughout the diverse activity. We integrated educational games into the workshop, fostering a deeper understanding of elephant ecology and behavior while simultaneously encouraging the exploration of elephant safety in a playful and lighthearted manner. The students enjoyed meeting Tembo (Swahili for ‘elephant’), a large elephant puppet with movable ears and trunk to demonstrate elephant posture and behavior. The students took turns practicing elephant warning signs with Tembo for the rest of the class. The instructors encouraged the students to think and express themselves throughout the workshop by encouraging involvement, asking questions, and finding the right answers together. Our goal was to cultivate a positive association with elephants among the students, achieved through a diverse range of lesson elements and a student-centered learning approach. To conclude the workshop, we facilitated an art session, providing students with the opportunity to create their own elephant art using recycled materials. We look forward to rolling this fun workshop out across our entire network!
