Supporting Healthcare Workers to Prevent Suicide

Recently, municipality officials reached out to our Nepal team about their concerns around rising suicide rates in Diktel, Khotang, where they encountered close to 100 cases of self harm and death by suicide in a two month period. With the rise in displacement, and as more and more people rely on social media and the digital world as their sources of human connection when they are forced to leave their home villages in search of the promise of a better life - isolation and loneliness have left many feeling like they have no hope and no other way out.

At Healing Together Nepal, we understand that this hopelessness doesn't exist in a vacuum. Collective care and community support can be the difference between life and death for many. To support the community in protecting their people, our team held a series of workshops to train volunteer community health workers and medical practitioners to offer trauma-informed care and support in healing their community in Diktel, Khotang.

Each of the three events offered the more than 100 participants an opportunity to learn what trauma is, to practice somatic strategies for nervous system regulation, and to engage with joy and play as tools for healing. There were many tears and laughter from both facilitators and participants who got to dance, play, and learn how to practice self care alongside collective care.

Our dream for the people in Diktel, Khotang is that they may be present for each other and themselves, to feel supported and cared for so they may lean on each other and in hope to inspire them to love and enjoy life the way they each deserve.
