Break Poverty Cycle of Roma Children in Romania

During our past activities we've realized that including kids into cleaning their areas makes them much more perceptive on the negative ipact they might cause with their neglect. Using this openness we've educated them so they can understand better the causes of their actions and how to avoid causing more damage.

Altough it is more difficult to reach out to disregarded groups during summer time (lack of the school system), we could make it possible to come together and facilitate upcycling, recycling and rubbish picking activities with our focus groups where we could include activities that unfolds environmental issues.

Among our groups of kids it is often normal to just dispose waste in meadows or into river valleys. We wanted to make sure they understood the impact of excess rubbish in their area (e. g.: health issues caused by viruses and bacteries, environmental damage, unappealing appearance, injuries caused by sharp objects, etc.)

Now that school is about to start we can focus our energies much more efficiently to our aims and we'll also test the kids, how much they remember of what they've learned and we'll evaluate whether their surroundings became cleaner since the vacation.

We are glad to announce that during the flow of 2023 we have managed to continue our positive impact in the life and future of the members of the neighboring Roma communities.

With the help of our volunteers we were able to show them the wonderful experience of playing board games in a supervised environment to keep fair play on top of all. We have tried out many board games with them throughout multiple sessions and have donated the ones they’ve enjoyed the most in order to help them improve their cognitive skills and to reinforce the importance of fairness in them; as you can enjoy a game only if you are keeping to the rules.

Furthermore we have collected rubbish together with several groups in multiple areas and were teaching them how important it is to dispose recyclable waste to their designated containers. Hopefully with the experience of collecting the rubbish they’ve displaced earlier, they will appreciate more the cleanliness in their areas.

In the meantime, while doing the above activities, we’ve also introduced the cultures of our foreign volunteers and explained them how people live in more developed countries and how they try to help those in need.

We are pretty positive that these experiences will help the youth of the Roma communities to appreciate fairness, the importance of an organized and clean environment and most importantly, to understand, where they have to improve in order to develop a sustainable future for themselves.
