Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure infant health and survival. Yet exclusive breastfeeding rates in Kosovo remain low. Many pregnant women and new mothers lack access to reliable breastfeeding information and support. We provide free, expert-led breastfeeding sessions where women receive evidence-based guidance on how to nourish their babies and can ask questions in a safe and supportive environment.
Kosovo's child mortality rates remain significantly higher than in Western Europe, with nearly 9 deaths per 1,000 children under five (UN estimates). Although breastfeeding is critical for infant survival and healthy development, only 29% of infants in Kosovo are exclusively breastfed during the first six months (MICS 2020). Many women lack access to accurate guidance and face early challenges without support. Many never start breastfeeding or stop earlier than recommended.
Action for Mothers and Children (Akcioni per Nena dhe Femije) and La Leche League Kosovo offer free, expert-led breastfeeding sessions for pregnant women and mothers. This is a safe, welcoming space for learning and discussion. Women receive practical guidance on breastfeeding, the birth process and early newborn care, while building confidence and connecting with others. These sessions help mothers start breastfeeding early and continue, supporting healthier outcomes for both mother and child.
Breastfeeding is a simple, proven intervention that can reduce infant and child mortality. When mothers receive the support they need, they are more likely to continue breastfeeding, which helps protect children from illness and support healthy growth and development. Breastfeeding also benefits mothers, lowering the risk of breast cancer and other serious diseases and contributing to long-term health and well-being. Together, this creates healthier families and stronger communities.
