Summary

Vultures in Nigeria are disappearing rapidly due to illegal hunting for traditional rituals, belief-based practices, and wildlife trade. Their decline disrupts ecosystems, as these birds play a vital role in cleaning up carcasses and preventing disease spread. This project supports breeding programs to restore vulture populations and collaborates with communities, youths, women, and traditional practitioners to stop harmful practices against vultures and initiate conservation efforts.

Challenge

Vultures in Nigeria are facing a severe crisis, with their populations plummeting due to a combination of illegal hunting for traditional rituals. These practices have led to the disappearance of vultures in many parts of the country. The decline of vultures disrupts ecosystems, as these birds play a vital role in cleaning up carcasses and preventing spread of diseases. Without them, communities face increased health risks due to accumulation of animal remains & proliferation of disease vectors.

Solution

We will establish a controlled breeding program to raise healthy vultures in safe environments. Once mature, these birds will be released into protected areas to help rebuild wild populations. We'll also conduct awareness campaigns in schools and communities to dispel myths about vultures being evil or bad omens and train volunteers to monitor vulture populations and report sightings. We'll also work with traditional practitioners to find alternatives to using vulture parts in rituals & medicine.

Long-Term Impact

Fifty protected breeding sites will be set up across different states in Nigeria. These sites will provide safe environments for vultures to nest and raise their young for population recovery. Through community-led monitoring and education, local residents will participate in conservation efforts in protecting vultures. Working with traditional leaders to identify sustainable alternative to vulture parts in rituals will reduce demand and protect these birds currently facing extinction in Nigeria
