Dear Friend,
On Wednesday, February 21st, Latin American Youth Center showcased “LAYC Night at the Apollo”—a celebration of creativity and expression in honor of Black History Month. All performers were youth who regularly access LAYC’s homeless youth Drop-In Center.
The event was created to bring exposure to the young talented people in our area who are experiencing homelessness—too often the talent, potential, creativity, and promise of such youth is overlooked. Beyond celebrating the youth, the event was also a good opportunity to raise their confidence and self-determination by setting goals, working towards the event, and performing. The show highlighted eight youth that sang, rapped, did stand-up comedy, played violin, and showcased their artistic works. The 90 audience members were moved by the passion and talent these young people demonstrated.
From a Drop-In Center staff member:
“The participants gave it their all of the stage, fighting through bouts of nervousness and cold feet. One particular youth came to the show only a day removed from heart and kidney surgery, while another fought through a stomach virus. The effort given for the little bit of practice time afforded for them was admirable on so many levels.”
Your donations support the life-saving services that our homeless youth program provides (like food, laundry, showers, etc.) AND opportunities for self-determination, confidence, and independent, like the “Night at the Apollo” event. We hope that this show will be an annual Black History Month event to celebrate our homeless young people. Thank you for your support.
Gracias,
Lori
