Bridge USAID Cuts: Fund Local NGOs in Africa

Summary

Local NGOs in Africa face a funding crisis as USAID reduces grants. These groups provide food, medical care, safe water, and shelter to millions, yet many are at risk of shutting down. UNICEF estimates 27 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa face severe hunger in 2025. Without support, lifesaving programs will collapse. This project will provide small and mid-sized grants to local NGOs to keep them active and responsive to urgent community needs.

Challenge

USAID's funding cuts threaten the survival of local NGOs that serve as frontline responders. These organizations often reach areas international groups cannot, yet many lack alternative funding. With rising food insecurity, poor health systems, and growing displacement, losing their services will increase hunger, untreated illness, and preventable deaths in rural and conflict-affected areas.

Solution

This project will issue competitive grants to local NGOs in Africa through an RFP process. Funds will cover food distribution, medical supplies, safe water, and temporary shelters. By supporting small community-based groups, the project keeps aid delivery active where it is needed most, while also strengthening local capacity to continue serving beyond this immediate funding gap.

Long-Term Impact

Sustaining local NGOs now prevents aid gaps that could lead to increased deaths and displacement. Over time, funded groups will maintain stronger networks and improved readiness for future crises. By supporting frontline responders during this funding crisis, communities retain access to lifesaving care, local leadership in aid delivery grows, and donor investment protects millions of lives.
