Dear friends and donors,

What a way to end 2021, and kick off the beginning of a new year. Your support to Bright Up Education for Indigenous Children allowed us to bring a brighter future to 32 indigenous children from the Alto Guaymí School in Punta Burica, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

We are happy to announce that between October 31 and November 5, and thanks to your amazing support, we were able to complete installation of a brand-new photovoltaic system at the Alto Guaymí School. This system includes a total of 14 solar panels, 12 batteries, one inverter, one safety cabinet and one charging controller.

As part of the efforts made by Fundación Omar Dengo, personnel from the school, parents and the community received training on how to manage their new photovoltaic system. At the same time, personnel from the National Program on Educational Informatics (PRONIE MEP-FOD) trained teachers and students on how to better use the digital technologies made available to them through this program. Currently, PRONIE MEP FOD supports 12.801 indigenous students that currently learn with the support of technological equipment, including the 32 students from Alto Guaymí School.

We prepared a short video to share with all of you the installation process and the experience of travelling to Alto Guaymí. We are sure you will enjoy this short video and will be keen to share it with family and friends. You can watch and share the video here.

At the same time, we would like to share with all of you our project Robotics for Young Women with Disabilities. We are sure that you will like to learn about our efforts to bring STEAM educational opportunities for young women with mild cognitive disabilities, who are deaf or hard of hearing. A brighter education is coming soon!

Electrical upgrade testing at Alto Guaymi School

Dear friends and donors,

We are happy to announce that during the week of July 26-30, 2021 our team of electricians completed the electrical upgrade required before the installation of the new photovoltaic system at the Alto Guaymí School. The photovoltaic system will be installed in the school by the end of the current year.

Thanks to your support to this project, we were able to complete the following tasks,

Purchase of all electrical materials.
Logistical coordination to bring the materials to Alto Guaymí, including transportation by land, by boat and by horse to move all the equipment and materials to the school.
Install new grounding system with copperweld rods, wiring, registers and grounded pipelines.
Installation of the main electrical board and breakers in accordance to code requirements and new load capacity.
Label all the electrical system and its components and comply with color-coding according with NFPA 70.
EMT pipe installation to channel all lighting circuits and electrical outlets cables at the school´s two classrooms, dining room, bathrooms and administrative office.
Construction of the electrical grounding mesh.

The electrical system was tested using an internal-combustion power generator, to make sure everything was installed and working properly, as shown in one of the attached pictures.

Now, a brighter education is closer to all the indigenous children in Alto Guaymí, thanks to all of your support. We will install the photovoltaic system between October and November of this current year.

Nos complace anunciarles que durante la semana del 26 al 30 de julio de 2021, nuestro equipo de electricistas completó la actualización eléctrica requerida antes de la instalación del nuevo sistema fotovoltaico en la Escuela Alto Guaymí. Este sistema se instalará en la escuela a finales del año en curso.

Gracias a tu apoyo hacia este proyecto, se logró completar las siguientes tareas:

Compra de los materiales eléctricos necesarios.
Coordinación logística para llevar los materiales a Alto Guaymí, incluido el transporte terrestre, en bote y a caballo para trasladar todo el equipo y materiales hasta la escuela.
Instalación de un nuevo sistema de puesta a tierra con varillas soldadas de cobre, cableado, registros y tuberías puestas a tierra.
Instalación del tablero principal y breakers, de acuerdo con los circuitos eléctricos y la nueva capacidad de carga.
Etiquetado de todo el sistema eléctrico y sus componentes, cumpliendo con la codificación de colores según la normativa NFPA 70.
Instalación de tubería EMT para canalizar todos los circuitos de iluminación y cables de enchufes eléctricos en las dos aulas de la escuela, comedor, baños y oficina administrativa.
Construcción de la malla de puesta a tierra.

El sistema eléctrico se probó utilizando un generador de energía de combustión interna, para asegurarse de que todo estuviera instalado y funcionando correctamente, como se muestra en una de las imágenes adjuntas.

Ahora, gracias a tu inmensurable apoyo, una educación más brillante está más cerca de todos los niños y niñas indígenas de Alto Guaymí. Instalaremos el sistema fotovoltaico entre octubre y noviembre del presente año.

Electrical upgrade at Alto Guaymi is almost here!

Dear friends,

Out technical team is working hard to make sure the installation of the photovoltaic system happens during the second semester of 2021. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen climatic conditions and difficulties to access the remote area of Alto Guaymí, this could not happen in June as initially planned. Even though these unexpected situations took a toll on our calendar, we are happy to announce to you, our donors and friends, that the initial electrical service upgrade for the Alto Guaymí School will take place during the last week of July 2021. Once this happens, and our technical team shares with us some pictures of the process, we will upload a new report to share pictures and good news with all of you.

At the same time, we want to announce that the final stage of the project, the installation of the photovoltaic system, is scheduled to happen in October 2021. This means that all of your support will bright up the educational opportunities of these young indigenous girls and boys. We are sure, you will enjoy watching the system fully installed and running in such a remote area of Costa Rica.

¡Pronto realizaremos las mejoras eléctricas en la escuela Alto Guaymí!

Estimados/as amigos/as,

Nuestros compañeros del equipo técnico están haciendo un esfuerzo importante para asegurarse de que el sistema fotovoltaico (SFV) esté instalado en la escuela Alto Guaymí durante el segundo semestre del 2021. Desafortunadamente, debido a situaciones climáticos y otros imprevistos fuera de nuestro control, que limitaron la posibilidad de ingreso a esta remota zona del país, no se logró cumplir con el cronograma inicial que habíamos planteado en nuestro reporte anterior. A pesar de esta situación, estamos muy felices de informarles que las mejoras eléctricas necesarias para la instalación del SFV se realizarán durante la última semana de julio de 2021. Una vez que se realicen éstas tareas, prepararemos un nuevo informe que nos permita compartir con todos/as ustedes algunas fotografías y éstas buenas noticias.

Al mismo tiempo, nos alegra informarles que la última etapa de nuestro proyecto está proyectada para completarse en octubre de 2021. Esto significa que tu colaboración nos ayudará a encender las oportunidades educativas de niños y niñas indígenas de Alto Guaymí. Nos comprometemos a mantenerlos informados y darles las buenas noticias, una vez que el sistema fotovoltaico esté instalado antes de que finalice el año. Estamos seguros que, así como nosotros, ustedes también disfrutarán de las fotografías, una vez que el sistema esté instalado y funcionando en un área tan remota de Costa Rica.
