3. PROGRAM BENEFICIARY'S STORY
Xiaoqi is a nine-year-old boy with lower limbs deformity. When he firstcameto Beijing Chunhui Care Home, his caregivers at the welfare institution reminded his Chunhui Mama that Xiaoqi was shy and introverted and would need extra patience and gentleness.
In June this year, accompanied by his Chunhui Mama, Xiaoqi was admitted to the National Rehabilitation Hospital and successfully underwent a left tibial osteotomy, tendon release, and Illizarov frame correction. After the surgery, Xiaoqi was well-behaved and never cried or fussed, but he refused to answer simple questions raised by the doctor during his rounds. When this happened, Chunhui Mama would rephrase the doctors' questions for Xiaoqi and then guided him to answer in short sentences. A few days later, through guided questioning, she encouraged Xiaoqi to speak up on his own and express his discomfort. Although his voice was barely audible, every time he said something, his Chunhui Mama would praise him warmly.
Over time, Xiaoqi shed his timidity. In the ward, his soft, sweet calls of "Mama ."could be heard again and again-each one filled with growing closeness and trust toward his Chunhui Mama. He even began to chat and joke with the medical staff. His lead surgeon remarked with emotion: "In our ward, what we heal is never just the physical disability. More often, it is the fear deep in a child's heart. Xiao Qi is the best testament to that."
Xiao Qi has now been discharged from the hospital and has returned to Beijing Chunhui Care Home for rehabilitation. He will go back to the hospital in two months for a secondstage corrective surgery.
At the Beijing Chunhui Care Home, Xiaoqi showcases his talent in handmaking. With the accompany of his Chunhui Mama, Xiaoqi enjoysbuilding imaginary playgrounds with LEGO bricks together with his friends. After he finished his building, his Chunhui Mama always tries to guide Xiaoqi to share his design ideas with the group. Encouraged by the other children. Xiaoqi smiles more often.
Xiaoqi's transformation is the truest answer of what love and companionship can give to a child. Chunhui Mama's companionship drives away the child's fear, making him more open up and be filled with the pure joy that belongs only to a child.
