Smiles Forever has offered expert dental care in Cochabamba for 25 years. Now we have established a dental care room at an indigenous school in the highlands. Here we provide dental education & give check-ups and urgent treatments. Also, we are conducting a 3-year study with the use of SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) to control active caries (cavities) and prevent further progression of the disease. 350 school age children are involved in this project. Children are freed from dental pain
Nowhere in South America is the lack of preventive dental care more alarmingly evident than in Bolivia, where thousands of young people are seen with severely decayed, life-threatening abscesses and missing teeth resulting from an epidemic of dental caries. Heavy consumption of sugary, carbonated beverages such as colas exacerbates the problem. Many children and adults suffer from gum disease, and there are very few specialists available to treat it
Smiles Forever brings dental care to children outside the city of Cochabamba. In Marquina we are conducting a 3-year study with the use of SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) to control active caries and prevent further progression of the disease. 350 school age children are involved in this project. The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared an epidemic of poor health world wide among disadvantaged populations. Smiles Forever is addressing this issue.
Dental caries and periodontal disease can result in even more serious health consequences. For example, periodontal disease can spread throughout the bloodstream and contribute to problems ranging from low birth-weight babies to stroke to heart disease. Lives are improved: Regular dental cleanings, X-rays, and fluoride treatments - which could help prevent the problems, are not actively being practiced in the dentist offices, nor do all Bolivian dentists promote brushing and flossing.
