Summary

The recent floods displaced one million people in South Sudan. Thousands are in a displacement camp lacking food, shelter, and medical help. With the flooding comes malaria, a major threat to children, and other diseases that severely threaten the health of the people. The need is great as each day passes without the basic healthcare for these desperate families and essential nutrition for the thousands of malnourished children.

Challenge

Flooding has left South Sudan's families fleeing to displacement camps. With the flooding comes the increased spread of malaria and waterborne diseases which pose a lethal threat to malnourished children. Already suffering from one of the highest child mortality rates in the world, South Sudan's need grows greater each passing day without access to basic healthcare and essential nutrition. With little outside support, SSHCO struggles to meet the medical and nutritional needs of 94,000 people.

Solution

Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization will provide the families with healthcare, essential nutrition, and the hope that they have not been forgotten. SSHCO has several mobile clinics providing healthcare to the thousands of displaced families, vaccinations, and nutrition for the many malnourished. It may be years before the people can return to their homes, but SSHCO is committed to being there to provide the needed medical help and food security for the families.

Long-Term Impact

Providing essential healthcare will save lives. Proper nutrition will prevent future illnesses and ensure children do not suffer from stunted growth or neurological damage. Vaccinations will protect the vulnerable children whose health is compromised by malnutrition and prevent measles outbreaks. Providing pre-natal care and education for mothers will ensure that newborn deaths are prevented. A healthy community results in its members capable of providing for their own physical needs.
