4th Report | Quality Education to Brazilian Children - Educacao Ja! (Education Now!)

By Rogerio Monaco | Institutional Relations

Dialogues #EDUCAÇÃO JÁ! performed and technical document ready!

We always reinforce that EDUCAÇÃO JÁ! (EDUCATION NOW!) is a plural and supra-partisan initiative, led by Todos Pela Educação (All for Education), which brings together specialists, movements and institutions committed to contributing to implement a set of urgent and structuring measures to the coming governments that are capable of promoting a quality leap in Brazilian Basic Education

EDUCAÇÃO JÁ! is based on three pillars:

Technical: The technical document, available on the website (https://www.todospelaeducacao.org.br/pag/iniciativa-educacao-ja), is ready and made available to the public. With focus on Federal Government, the document brings the context of Basic Education in Brazil, a diagnosis of educational policies, and, finally, list medium and long-term measures that would make possible the long-awaited jump in the quality of Brazilian Basic Education. It highlights a set of 7 priority measures to be implemented already in the next government.

A highly accredited group participated in the technical elaboration of this document (the group met 6 times, from January to June). The document also received more than 30 contributions from various professionals and experts.

Articulation: In August, Todos Pela Educação received at its headquarters in São Paulo four candidates for the Presidency of the Republic to discuss the challenges of Basic Education in Brazil. In a series of meetings held in partnership with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo (SP), they revealed to voters what they plan to prioritize in the area if they win the coming electoral race. (https://www.todospelaeducacao.org.br/conteudo/dialogos-educacaoo-ja-tudo-que-rolou-em-quatro-encontros-com-presidenciaveis).

Communication: In addition to the unprecedented series of dialogs on Basic Education, along with the main candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, in partnership with Folha de S. Paulo, Todos Pela Educação mobilized to help more than 100 journalists on Education, focusing on electoral coverage, with highlight to TV Globo, Band, CBN, UOL and O Povo (CE). In addition Todos Pela Educação prioritize incidence along strategic vehicles for prioritization of Education in the electoral coverage, with spaces conquered in vehicles of relevance. Without saying that Todos held strategic events that placed Education at the center of the country's strategic debate, such as the Exame Forum (Abril Group), and E Agora Brasil? (O Globo / Valor), Reconstruction of Brazil (O Estado de S. Paulo), among others.

Opportunity for systemic changes:

2019, due to the October national elections, will be a year of structural change opportunities in the country - among them, to transform the Basic Education scenario positively - since the beginning of new mandates brings significant opportunities for the implementation of structural changes.

While we do not prioritize quality basic education with equity, the crises we constantly see in Brazil will continue to repeat themselves. Although Education is not able to solve all of our problems, without it we will not be able to advance - education is a key element to propel the country to the height of the protagonism that Brazil should have. It is the most powerful tool to promote opportunities for citizens. The gains are collective, and individual.

Today the scenario of Education in Brazil is critical. We are experiencing a crisis of learning - there is a serious scenario of stagnation of Basic Education in Brazil. We are not making progress in expanding access at the necessary speed - we still have about 370,000 children aged 4 and 5, and 903,000 young people aged 15 to 17 out of school (PnadC 2017), and these age groups should already have the universalized access in 2016. By 2015 (PNAD / Todos Pela Educação), only 58.5% of young people have completed high school until the age of 19. In public schools, only half of the children are literate at the end of the 3rd year of primary school (ANA 2016), and at the end of secondary school, only 22% of students know the basics of Portuguese and only 4% of mathematics (Saeb / Todos Pela Educação).
