Reaching Orphans in Harsh Conditions: Field Challenges Inside Northern Syria's Camps

By HASAN SADIK | Project leader

Dear Donors,

From Amal Alumma Organization

Across the vast displacement camps of northern Syria—where winter cold bites deeply and summer heat is unforgiving—our field teams work tirelessly every day to reach the most vulnerable orphaned children. And while your generous contributions create real and lasting impact, the process of identifying and supporting these children inside the camps comes with significant challenges.

Here are the key challenges our teams face during field assessments inside the camps:

1. Difficult Access to Informal and Constantly Changing Camps

The structure of the camps changes frequently as families move or new tents are added. There are no clear roads or stable pathways, and during rainy seasons the ground turns into mud, making it extremely difficult for our teams to move between tents and reach orphaned children.

2. Orphans Forced to Leave School and Work at a Young Age

Many children we encounter have been forced to leave their education behind and work to support their families after losing their primary caregiver. Helping these children return to school is one of our most important and challenging tasks, and your support makes this possible.

3. Very Young Orphans Who Never Experienced Fatherhood

Inside the camps, we meet children who have lost their fathers in their earliest years—children who know nothing beyond the tent and the pain of absence. These young ones require emotional care and psychological support in addition to basic material aid.

4. Lack of Documentation and Difficulty Verifying Information

With families constantly displaced, many lose their official documents, making the verification of orphan status more difficult. Our teams invest significant time in building trust with families and gathering accurate data to ensure aid reaches those who truly need it.

5. Harsh Living Conditions for Widowed Mothers

Mothers who have lost their husbands face overwhelming psychological and economic pressure while trying to care for their children alone. This places an additional responsibility on our teams to provide guidance, reassurance, and support to help them cope.

Despite all these challenges, your generosity empowers Amal Alumma Organization to continue this essential work. Because of your support, we reach orphans in the camps, provide age-appropriate sponsorships, help return children to school, and bring a sense of stability and hope to families living in the harshest conditions.

Thank you for your trust…
And thank you for bringing hope to places where it is most needed.
