Thanks to all of you, Abaco Strong is making an impact on Food Security in Abaco.
We have recently implemented several programs to address the rising cost of food and to support those who have been impacted by Hurricane Dorian and The Global Pandemic and are still struggling to put food on the table.
Our ABC Breakfast Program is still going strong. Studies show that breaksfast helps children do better in school by improving concentration, test scores, and attendance. The Chidren at Coopers Town Primary School are served a hot breakfast two mornings a week as they arrive on the school bus. The children and the teachers alike ar very grateful for this program.
Our Backyard Farmers Program is providing much needed materials and supplies that enable families and individuals to grow their own fruits and vegetables. We recently introduced The Abaco Farmers Market to provide a venue for Backyard Farmers to sell their produce. The First Abaco Farmers Market was held in February in Marsh Harbour at The BAIC Plaza. There were over 25 vendors selling a wide varity of items including vegetables, seedlings, candles, jewelry, prepared food, baked goods, and local honey to name a few. Abaco Strong also supplied fruit trees for Our Backyard Farmes at a subsidized cost and many of them are already harvesting mangos, bananas, avocados, soursop, sugar apples, and more.
The Treasure Cay Community Aquaponic Garden now supports twelve families who have learned about aquaponic gardening through our Program and are growing all kinds of vegetables. They have been harvesting ochra, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and more. Aquaponic Gardening is completely organic and requires very little space or maintenance once it is established. Aquaponics also acts as an independent ecosytem and does not require fertile soil which is hard to come by in Abaco.
These programs promote independence and sustainability, and help to reduce the need to import food from outside of the Bahamas. Thank you for supporting our programs and helping to increase food security in Abaco!
