Proyecto Mayu is celebrating a milestone in 2025: 10 years of providing free medical and dental care to Venezuelan communities in need. For the first half of the year, we've already reached two communities, despite their considerable distance from each other.
In March, our team visited San Pedro, Lara State, a community known for its warm and welcoming residents. We brought a range of medical specialties, including: Oral Surgery, Internal medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Dermatology, Bioanalysis, Psychology and Dentistry.
We attended to a total of 456 patients. The primary diagnoses observed were arterial hypertension in adults, atopic dermatitis in children, and dental caries. Beyond direct medical care, we continued our commitment to health education and disease prevention through interactive community activities. We also gathered valuable data for our ongoing research project, which focuses on the challenges faced by women in rural areas.
In April, our team traveled to Kumarakapay, an indigenous Pemón community in Bolívar State. This trip allowed us to reconnect with our roots in southern Venezuela. The word "mayu" originates from the Pemón language and doesn't have a direct Spanish translation. However, during a 2015 medical outreach to the Pemón tribe, the doctors of Proyecto Mayu understood its meaning to be "teamwork for the greater good."
This journey was particularly significant as it allowed us to revive the original spirit of Mayu during our tenth anniversary. In Kumarakapay, we provided care for 339 patients. The most common diagnoses included arterial hypertension in adults, allergic rhinitis in children, and various dental issues like caries and gingivitis. We also conducted our usual health education and disease prevention activities.
We have many more plans for the remainder of 2025! Our next destination will be La Marroquina in Yaracuy State, our most frequently visited community. We always look forward to seeing the immense improvements in our patients' health there.
We are incredibly grateful for your continued support and for being an integral part of this project, which touches the hearts of so many Venezuelans.
