Every school holiday Brixton People’s Kitchen tries to do something special for our local community. Last December was no different as we prepared for our BPK Christmas Kids Camp! However, over the Christmas holidays COVID cases were rising in our local area and we had the safety and wellbeing of our community at the forefront of our minds.
So, while we had to shift our vision slightly, we still provided vital support for our community and beyond over Christmas.
We provided pre-packed grocery bags for 40 families, which were filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, cupboard staples, cooking aids and bread. Our volunteers did an amazing job packing the bags for our community and made sure each bag had enough food in it to last a week. This meant we had done our very best to ensure all families had food up until the 29th and 30th, where they received another weekly shop on us.
We are particularly proud of our Christmas Activity boxes. Each box contained a myriad of arts and crafts activities designed to keep children engaged over the school holidays. These were a fun mixture of creative and educational tasks that encouraged creativity, play and educational development.
Alongside this, each activity box contained an activity booklet, which we designed and printed ourselves. Within this booklet contained activities around food, nutrition and mindfulness. We like to think that the children went away and filled out their booklets and learnt a little from them, without even realising they were learning. A bit like how we always manage to sneak them some vegetables in their lunch!
Some families even looked at the boxes of fun we created and told us they were going to save them to give to their children as Christmas presents.
