The Next Chapter of the Forest Classroom

What happens after the construcion is over?

At the end of June, our team of volunteers from Lithuania returned to the Bucha Forest Classroom. While the construction phase has come to an end, this visit marked the beginning of the next stage of the project: ensuring that the classroom is  easily maintained, and cared for by the local community.

During the visit, we completed several important follow-up activities. We introduced booking system to support its long-term management, carried out maintenance works, refreshed the educational garden, and held meetings with local friends (not just partners anymore) to discuss the next steps for operating and developing the space.

Returning to Bucha reminded us that our role does not end with delivering a completed structure - it continues through long-term collaboration, shared responsibility, and ongoing support.

And we enjoyed every moment spent in the Classroom and the Garden.

Low Carbon Lab Quest

The Forest Classroom also became a venue for the Low Carbon Lab Quest youth climate innovation lab, organized as part of the New European Bauhaus Festival 2026 Satellite Events programme in partnership with Green Bucha.

Over several hours, young participants explored the impacts of climate change, discussed what they want Bucha to look like in 2036, and developed ideas to make their community greener, more comfortable, and more resilient. Working in teams, they proposed projects including a waste sorting awareness campaign, lake clean-up and water quality monitoring, community-based air quality monitoring, greening residential areas, and green roofs.

Each team presented its ideas and received recommendations for further development, demonstrating how the Forest Classroom can serve not only as an educational space, but also as a platform for civic participation, creativity, and climate action.

Looking Ahead

Seeing the Forest Classroom completed and already embraced by the community leaves us with one question: Is it time to build the next one? We've learned, we've made mistakes, we've found wonderful partners and friends along the way. Most importantly, we've seen that building the classroom was only the beginning. We still have the energy and the motivation to keep going.
