Budongo Women Bee Enterprises (BUWOBE) supplies young mothers in sugarcane-dominated mid-western Uganda with five beehives each to produce honey, increasing their income by up to 60%. Sugarcane fields occupy most arable land, affecting 20,000+ immigrants, including young mothers, who can spend over 10 hours a day working to feed their families. The BUWOBE Cooperative trains the young mothers on less time intensive, eco-friendly honey & byproduct producing skills, and provides access to markets.
In sugarcane-dominated district of Masindi Uganda, youth have limited economic opportunities due to high levels of school dropout and lack of arable land for traditional farming. Girls and young women are most affected by early marriage and pregnancy, extreme poverty, and living far from and being unable to pay for school. In remote villages, young mothers lack access to income-generating activities that can allow them support their families and keep their children healthy and free from disease.
BUWOBE trains young mothers in beekeeping enterprises so they may earn an income while practicing sustainable agriculture. The young mothers are also provided with free beehives and supplies for simple and eco-friendly beekeeping. By producing and selling honey and honey byproducts, including herbal cough syrup, a product with high local market demand, young mothers increase their income by up to 60%, empowering themselves for a brighter future.
The project will support 1,000 young mothers to increase their income from honey and honey byproducts, empowering them to have more access to healthcare and social services, nutritional food, and educational opportunities that will improve their lives. With more bees in the community, more trees and crops planted to support them, food production increases, the effects of climate change and deforestation are reduced, and the overall environmental quality of the area improves.
