The project will provide cash transfers and asset creation for 250 Households @45$ as those affected by ongoing drought in Northern Kenya. A vast majority of the communities have lost capacity to cope with drought due to climate change literally losing their livelihoods. Food crops production was low associated with late land preparation while nomadic herders have lost their entire livestock. Marsabit Long rains assessment puts the number of households in need of food intervention is 291,000.
Kenya faces severe drought due to climate change now a national disaster. The need to protect planets natural resources, its biodiversity, spreading environmental justice and raising awareness is eminent. Number of those affected has actually doubled from 1.3M to 2.6M. Two consecutive rainfall failures and the effects are huge with regard to widespread crop failure, acute water shortage, Food Insecurity & 80% of the livestock perished. Exhausting peoples capacity to cope making them vulnerable.
HODI is currently working with 152 villages in four sub counties of Marsabit. Provision of water was crucial and HODI supported some of the villages with water tanks. The families coping capacities are low . There is a dire need to upscale existing programs and provision of food/non-food items to 1,000 Households. Scaling of HODI Resilience Model in the targeted villages in 2020 while protecting the planets resources, its biodiversity, environmental justice & raising awareness on climate change.
HODI a champion for building resilient communities is looking at increased capacities to cope & mitigate effects of climate change as a long term impact. This will help reduce vulnerability levels through interventions of kitchen gardens, rainwater harvesting, enhanced food security, HODI saving scheme & sustainable livelihoods. Building local communities capacity with strong structures & systems to reduce vulnerability & enhance resilience through a HODI award winning Social Enterprise Model.
