IMPACT REPORT 2023

Greetings,

This is the impact report for 2023, with your support we were able to reach 12 Quusano Village Group through training of 12 leaders on group dynamics. The Group Leaders had an opportunity to learn more about the legal requirement. The groups have successfully completed filling their annual returns and quarterly reports and they have saved a total of 520,200 Kenya Shillings. Three Village Groups received a total of 680,000 Kenya Shillings.

Under the Integrating Peace Building, Development and Humanitarian efforts across the Kenya, Ethiopia Cross Border. 121 youth leaders were equipped with knowledge on social inclusion, conflict resolution, safeguarding and leadership. 14 youth group leaders started monthly dialogue and discuss the challeges they are facing. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) commitees in 11 locations have been established and trained as DRR Committees on drought management cycle, early warning and early response and they also developed 11 DRR action plans. We also manged to supported 5 cross border meetings with other stakeholders in partnership with the county and national government. 21 community volunteers trained on HODI policy and procedures, vulnerability and risk assessment, DRR Committee training, youth training, report writing, baseline survey for households and being a link between the organisation and the communities. HODI also supported the drafting of the Marsabit County peacebuilding and conflict resolution bill.

HODI also managed to distribute 20 balls and 80 cones to 4 schools impacting 800 participated and also as a result, football hours and the league matches were smoothly implemented. 8 new coaches were also trained on life skills, child safeguarding, organisation policies and procedures, league and match preparation, event delivery and as a result, coaches implemented the lessons among the children they work with in the community. 414 girls and boys registered and played in 66 matches in the school league, thereby exercising their rights to play and learn. 8 coaches supported their participation. These provided a platform where participants from different enthnicity can interact, play exchange culture and ultimately leading to formation of strong bonds. The 800 participants played, learnt life skills and had a safe space through football hour in schools where they learnt life skills on peace building and gender equality and through these participants were able to embrace gender equality and peaceful coexistence.

Finally we also managed to distribute essential hygiene products to 280 vulnerable girls enrolled in primary schools. The girls were issued with 30 boxes of disposable pads and 39 dozen undergarments to support them during their menstrual cycles and reduce the number of girls who are absent from schools due to lack of sanitary hygiene materials. The organisation managed to educate 280 primary school girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene, how to use the essential hygiene products during menstrual flow and being comfortable talking about menstration.

Community question and answer session

Project: Qusanno. (QUS2023)

Key results

- Capacity of 12 qusanno village group leaders was enhanced to manage

groups affairs through training on group dynamics. Group leaders from Qusanno had an opportunity to interact with the social service department to learn more about legal requirements.
- Qusanno groups have successfully completed filing their annual tax returns for 2022 as required by regulations.
- Qussano village groups filed quarterly progress reports with the regulator.
- Total of Ksh 520,200 contributed.
- Ksh 680,000 has been granted to 3 village groups.

Key activities
- Monthly meetings, monthly savings, loan repayments and new loans.
- Updating monthly saving data in the Qusanno app. Monthly savings and loan repayment in branded books for 4 qusanno villages.
- KRA returns filing for 4 qusanno villages, progress reports with the social service department office and yearly certificate renewal.

Project: Integrating peacebuilding, development and humanitarian efforts across the Kenya Ethiopia cross border. (IPDHE2022/24)

Key results

- 121 youth have been equipped with knowledge on social inclusion, conflict

resolution, safeguarding and leadership. 14 youth chairs from 13 youth groups have started monthly dialogue and discuss the challenges they are facing.
- DRR committees in 11 locations have been established and trained as DRR committees on Drought management cycle, early warning and early response and developed 11 action plans. 11 DRR action plans have been developed.
- 5 cross border peace meetings supported with other stakeholders in partnership with both national and county governments.
- IPDHE project launch was successfully conducted and attended by the community from Sololo, Marsabit and Moyale. 82 people attended the meeting. Through the meeting the identified communities were able to learn about HODI and partners and the project goals.
- 21 community volunteers have been onboarded and trained on HODI policy and procedure, vulnerability and risk assessment,DRR committee training, youth training, report writing, baseline survey for households and their roles

- Youth mapping and training conducted for 4 locations with 121 representatives of 53 youth groups and 13 youth champions.
- 11 locations have been trained on vulnerability and risk assessment and have developed 11 action plans.
- 11 local peace committees (165 members) from 2 sub counties have been established through IPDHE2022/24.

Project: Mala Marii: Empowering the communities of Butiye and Sololo wards to become resilient in a changing environment. MAL2023/25

Key results

- 8 HODI(5F and 2M) Staff Increased capacity to present Malamarii project to stakeholders,duty bearers,and community members and community leaders and planned well for implementation of project activities.
- 40 community members from two villages of Malamarii; Butiye and Teso, have been equipped with knowledge on CMDRR approach and developed 2 community action plans to reduce vulnerability in 2 communities.

- 10 community facilitators have been identified,selected and equipped with knowledge on CMDRR approach and dialogue session facilitation skills to Facilitate monthly dialogue sessions for 3 villages.

Project: Educating Girls in Kenya. (EGK)

Key results

- Distribution of essential hygiene products to 280 vulnerable girls enrolled in

primary schools. The girls were issued with 30 Boxes of disposable pads and 39 dozen undergarments to support them during their monthly menstrual cycles and reduce the number of girls who are absent from schools due to lack of sanitary hygiene materials.
- Educated d280 primary school girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene, how to use the essential hygiene products during menstrual flow and being comfortable talking about menstruation.

Key activities
- 625 pads and 468 undergarments were distributed to 280 vulnerable girls

in four primary schools and 68 pcs of pads were left with schools for emergencies.

Community workshop in June 2023

Shoot to Score

With the support of the GlobalGiving community and the FIFA Foundation, we have successully completed the following activities between May and September 2023:

8 youth have successfully completed their training as coaches. They are currently coaching over 400 boys and girls in 4 schools in Marsabit as part of the Shoot to score project.
400 participants are taking part in the Shoot to score project for the year 2023.
HODI is providing bibs, cones and balls for football hours and the school league.
The 400 participants are taking part in twice-a-week football hour days and a twice-a-month school league.

Building Resilient Households

12 village group leaders were trained on group dynamics to enhance their capacity in the management of group affairs.The workshop was co-facilitated by the social service department of the national government to provide an opportunity to learn about legal requirements.

4 women groups have successfully completed filing their annual tax returns as required by regulations, and have also filed quarterly progress reports with the regulator.

Peacebuilding

As part of peacebuilding and development work in Moyale, the following results have been achieved:

21 community volunteers have successfully been recruited and trained to support peacedbuilding and development work in their communities.
HODI has supported the production of the Marsabit County Peace Policy and Bill which is now ready for adoption by the County government of Marsabit.
11 communities in Moyale have designed and validated action plans to address vulnerabilities in the communities.
HODI facilitated 2 cross border peace meetings that were held in Moyale to bring communities from both sides of the border together. The communities and governments resolved to work hand in hand to ensure peace is susitained.
HODI also facilitated 2 further cross border meetings between communities living in Dukana (Kenya) and Dillo (Ethiopia) to ensure that conflict does not spill over due to killings and loss of livestock in July 2023. On September 23, the communities resolved during the 4th peace meeting to pay blood money for the killing of one boy after suspects were arrested, and to return 140 goats and sheep that were missing after the clashes.
