This project will provide bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets, mosquito nets) for 104 girls in the dormitories at Ayak Anguei Girls' Primary School in Konbek, South Sudan. Currently over 450 girls are enrolled at the boarding school
At this time, not all students in the newly constructed dorms at school have the funds to provide sheets, blankets and pillows for their new bunk beds that were delivered December 1 2011. Despite the joy of bunk beds and mattresses to sleep on, the girls' families who live on less than .75 cents a day in the most remote area in South Sudan are not able to provide their daughters with funds to purchase sheets, pillows and blankets.
PESS South Sudan Director will be able to identify with the headmaster and head matron which orphan girls are in need of bedding. The Sudan Director will then purchase and deliver the bedding at the earliest possible time so more of the girls can stay on the school compound and avoid returning home to chores, fetching water and vulnerable to early arranged marriages. Providing mosquito nets will lower the incidence of malaria, thus cutting down on school absenteeism.
Only 1% of girls have access to receive primary education and less than 1% have access to secondary education. Only 10% of girl children in South Sudan attend school and over 93% of women are illiterate. Giving these girls the opportunity to go to school and receive equal access to education will have a lasting impact on the development of the region.
