Summary

Indigenous Rwandans are commonly called the people "left behind by history" by their neighbors. Internationally, they are known as Batwa Pygmies. Research shows that many lack the means and education to adapt to 21st century culture. A new meeting room at the only nursery school we know of dedicated to these children will make space for 100 new students, and help empower them to enter a bright and prosperous new future.

Challenge

The Irerero Nursery School is so successful that the number of children in attendance has doubled in the last few years, and the small building is bursting its seams. All these children deserve to have the opportunity to attend the enriching daily activities. This building will also be used for other educational and cultural activities, not limited to but including: poem writing, theatre performances, singing, "Amakondera" flute lessons, and Kwize (men dances) practice.

Solution

With the addition of this meeting and multi-purpose room, we will be able to add a third teacher dividing the 115 children into three groups. This change will allow each child to have more one-on-one attention and maintain the high standard of educational practices at the school.

Long-Term Impact

The children who have attended two or more years at the Irerero Nursery School are very successful when they attend Primary School. All of these children's families belong to the lowest income level in Rwanda and thus benefit greatly from early childhood education by empowering them to succeed as self-reliant members of the community, creating a positive effect on the future.
