Summary

The Demonstration School for Deaf Children wants to expand its program to senior secondary education so that our 115 students and others can access higher-level education. There is no senior secondary school in Kaduna dedicated to deaf students and many of them end up idle after junior secondary school. The goal is to provide specialised education for deaf children at senior levels and open up more career options for them through admission into universities and other higher-level institutions.

Challenge

DSDC has not been able to expand its program beyond Junior secondary school due to lack of funding. The state-owned Senior secondary school for all disabled children is not well run so graduates from DSDC Junior secondary school terminate their education after DSDC since they lack access to specially trained teachers who can prepare them for admission into universities. Most of them remain dependent on their parents and lose their sense of dignity since they are treated as dregs of society.

Solution

Specialized teachers will be recruited for the Senior secondary program to ensure the students are properly equipped to sit for various qualifying examinations they need to gain admission into universities. They will also have access to vocational and entrepreneurial training to increase their career choices. The unacceptable option is to leave these children with huge potential to return to motor parks and other undesirable locations to beg for handouts simply because they are hearing-impaired.

Long-Term Impact

Access to standard higher level academic opportunities will make it possible for hearing-impaired individuals to explore different career paths, become self-reliant and integrate quickly into society. Deaf children will not be seen as pariahs who do not even deserve to be called by their given names but by a simple word, "kuruma", which means "deaf". Hundreds of hearing-impaired individuals will become productive members of their communities and will be treated with the respect they deserve.
