Project Report | May 29, 2026
School renovations

By Auma Sharon | Project contributer

*Report: School Structure Renovations*
*Theme: Safe Spaces, Stronger Learning at Gaba Hope for Kids*

This term, we focused on fixing the buildings where children learn. When classrooms leak, floors crack, or desks collapse, learning stops. With focused support for school structure renovations, we turned unsafe spaces into classrooms where children can sit, write, and focus. The goal was simple: remove the physical barriers so education can happen.

*What The Structures Looked Like Before*
Several classrooms had leaking roofs, broken windows, and uneven floors. Rainy days meant classes were dismissed early because water flooded the rooms. Broken desks forced three children to share one seat. Poor lighting and ventilation made it hard for teachers and students to concentrate, especially during afternoon lessons. One structure was at risk of collapse and had been marked unsafe by teachers.

*What Renovations Looked Like*
We did not build new schools. We repaired what children already use every day:

1. *Roof + Drainage Repairs*: Fixed leaking roofs and cleared drainage so classrooms stay dry during rain. No more early dismissals because of floods.
2. *Floors + Walls*: Leveled uneven floors and repaired cracked walls to make rooms safe and stable. Children can move without tripping hazards.
3. *Windows + Ventilation*: Replaced broken windows and added ventilation so rooms have light and fresh air. Teachers say students are more alert.
4. *Desks + Seating*: Repaired and reinforced desks and benches. Each child now has a proper seat and space to write.
5. *Safety Checks*: Inspected all structures and closed off one building that was unsafe until full repairs can be done.

*What Is Changing For Children + Teachers*
Attendance is more consistent because rain no longer shuts classes down. Teachers report fewer distractions and more time for actual teaching. Children say they feel proud of their classroom and take better care of it. When a room is safe and comfortable, children show up and stay engaged.

One teacher put it simply: “When the roof stopped leaking, learning started again.” That matters. Children cannot focus on math or reading when they are dodging drips or sitting on broken benches. Safe structures protect health, dignity, and learning time.

*Next Steps To Keep Spaces Safe*
To make sure these gains last, we need to:
1. *Complete Pending Repairs*: Finish work on the one structure that is still closed for safety reasons.
2. *Routine Maintenance*: Set up termly checks for roofs, floors, and furniture so small issues get fixed before they become big ones.
3. *Learning Materials Storage*: Add lockable shelves so books and supplies stay dry and safe.

*Closing*
School structure renovations mean children learn without fear. It proves that the environment matters as much as the books. When we fix the room, we protect the lesson.

*Call to Action*
Want to help us keep classrooms safe and ready for learning? Your support helps us repair roofs, fix furniture, and maintain safe spaces for children. Reply “Renovate” and we will share details on structures waiting for repairs.

Every child deserves a classroom that is safe, dry, and ready for learning.
