Following our Emergency Response to the devastating earthquakes in 2018, we realized that environmental degradation is a serious threat and decided to set up an Environmental Awareness Program for the community (see video). The building of a Bamboo Community Eco-Empowerment Space close to Rinjani volcano, will enable the community to explore environmental issues & solutions and also symbolize their commitment to care for their environment and adopt good practices.
The amount of trash left alongside Rinjani treks, the lack of waste management system in surrounding villages combined with deforestation, excessive chemical uses in farming, and extensive deforestation is a time bomb for the area. Almost all stakeholders in general and Rinjiani children as the future generation, in particular, are not getting proper environmental education and awareness.
Our consultations with the local community show their willingness to participate in awareness programs and good practices workshops. We already have secured funding to conduct activities targeting each of stakeholders using the facilities The construction of Sembalun Bamboo Eco-Empowerment space is not only a facility for the community to explore the environmental issues but also the symbol of their commitment to care for their environment and adopt good practices.
The long term use of this Eco-Empowerment community space should greatly impact the local environment of the 6 villages of the Sembalun district in general, contribute in the preservation of the water quality of Lombok main natural water reservoir, in the development of no-impact tourism on the slope of Mount Rinjani, in the decrease of deforestation and utilization of good farming practices. Environmental education of children will be a key for the future of this area.
