Summary

We will construct and open a community learning center with five classrooms in rural Northern Ghana, for 150 young children to attend school for the first time. In a region with limited school access, our community partners have chosen education as their highest priority. Local teachers use culture and environmental curriculums to inspire children to learn. A small kitchen for school lunches will reduce malnutrition. Solar power and rainwater catchment help make the schools sustainable.

Challenge

In our partner villages of rural Northern Ghana there are few educational opportunities with most schools being too far away for students to reach. Adult literacy is rare and most families are subsistence farmers living near the global poverty line. Harvests are threatened by rising temperatures, changing rainfalls, and loss of soil and both food and water shortages are common. These challenges are especially severe for women and girls.

Solution

Our partner communities have identified education as their first goal and work together to support their children's educations. Over the last six years, we have built and opened three community schools with nearly 400 students, half of whom are girls. Local teachers use a place-based curriculum emphasizing culture and the environment. Children receive daily lunches, uniforms, shoes, and learning supplies. This new school will give children from a fourth village the chance to begin school.

Long-Term Impact

Each community learning center student attends from pre-school to 2nd grade. Then, they begin our youth education program at regional private school since there are no public junior high schools within bicycling distance. Later they can join our vocational training program. We are committed to ensuring all children have both educational and future economic opportunities. Community schools are also very empowering and provide a place for adult literacy classes and emergency food distribution.
