This Project will help repair and recover the "Every Child Counts" school for kids with special needs in the town of Marsh Harbour, in the Bahamas. This school was destroyed during the pass of typhoon Dorian through the Bahamas during August and September of 2019. The goal is to provide a safe and well designed space for around 100 students, to develop their learning and everydaylife activities in a caring and warm environment, using local building techniques and workforce.
In September of 2019 typhoon Dorian devastated The Bahamas, particularly the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. In Abaco we can find one of only two schools for kids with special needs in the whole Bahamas: Every Child Counts (ECC) School. This school has been working with special needs students for over 25 years, receiving an average of 100 students from around the country. After Dorian the school was seriously damaged and forced to stop their activities, leaving students in uncertainty.
This project aims to recover the buildings that comprise the ECC School campus, in order to restore the normal activities for the students, empowering them to continue their growth and education. The project considers the reconstruction of the affected buildings, not only to their original condition but also including new constructive and architectural principles that can improve the quality and performance of the different spaces through a "build back better" approach.
ECC School has defined itself as a center for children with diverse and complex needs in the Bahamas, working tirelessly for more than 25 years. The recovery of the school and its spaces would allow for this organization to restart their activities and continue to help and empower the children with special needs in Abaco island and other surrounding areas for years to come.
