Summary

The high-priority project, requested by the community, aims to dramatically improve the quality of health and education at Beraketa primary school, in rural Madagascar. SEED will construct three classrooms, sanitation facilities, a water supply with handwashing stations, and housing for a teacher and their family. Infrastructure provision will be complemented by sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education. CO2 emissions from the build will be offset with community tree planting.

Challenge

In the Anosy region, 16% of children complete primary and only 2.5% complete lower secondary education. Cramped conditions, unprotected water sources, zero hand-washing and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities exacerbates absenteeism and increases disease transmission. Teachers live far away and receive low pay furthering absenteeism and quality of education. 2022's Cyclone Batsirai destroyed Beraketa primary school and now the 129 students and 6 teachers operate from a makeshift tent.

Solution

Project Sekoly will alleviate these barriers by improving the education and WASH infrastructure for the 129 students and 6 teachers. SEED will construct three classrooms, sanitation facilities, a water supply and handwashing stations, and housing for a teacher and their family. The provision of infrastructure will be complemented by sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education. SEED will offset CO2 emissions from the build with a community-managed tree plantation.

Long-Term Impact

1) Enable 129 students to attend school full-time through construction of three new classroom 2) Improve teacher absenteeism by constructing on-site housing for a teacher and their family 3) Improve gender-equitable sanitation through 5 gender-segregated toilets & 4) Improve WASH access for 129 students with new water supply hand-washing and MHM facilities 5) Increase WASH knowledge and behaviours among students and teachers with educations sessions 6) Offset all carbon produced by project
