This project will build three basic classrooms in improved "apatam" style in the village of Dafolenyame in southern Togo. The classrooms will also be equipped with locally manufactured school benches to enable 200 primary school students to learn in a safe and adequate environment. Finally, face masks and hand washing systems will be provided in the classrooms to protect the students from COVID-19 infections.
The primary school of the village of Dafolenyame has never consisted of a proper school building nor classrooms. Instead, students sit on tree trunks or on the floor under improvised straw-covered shelters. This school infrastructure is prone to fire in dry season and flooding in wet season, not enabling a proper learning environment for students. Thus, students drop out of school or parents prefer to keep their children at home, which severely endangers this children's future.
SADA will build an adequate school infrastructure for the village of Dafolenyame. Students will be able to sit and learn on school benches and the classrooms can withstand dry and wet season. Improved school infrastructure will make it more likely for parents to send their children to school and for students not to drop out of school.
A continued primary education decreases the illiteracy rate in the region, allowing more children continueing further education, finding a good job, earning a decent income and finally providing themselves and their families with a better life. In the end, they can contribute to the development of their local community and their country.
