Austin Habitat's integrated community collaboration build. The Build for Unity house bands together members from all communities, both interfaith and intercultural, to create a home for a local family. This project showcases the best of what Austin is: a city that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and home.
We need to raise money to build our Build for Unity house at Scenic Point in East Austin. The house will be a home for a single mother who is taking care of her aging parents, her daughter, and her 11-year-old son who is a recovering cancer patient. The home will bring stability to the family, as they're running out of places to live in Austin.
The home will provide long-term, stable shelter for the family. No longer will they be forced to move every few months for cheaper rent, or be forced to share two bedrooms between five people. The home will also provide stability for the son, who is recovering from cancer, and who hasn't had a back or a front yard to play in.
Studies show that children who live in Habitat houses have a greater chance of going and graduating from college. Both children in the home will have stability education wise, as they'll be able to finish a school year at the same school instead of transferring around. The mother is in the service industry, an industry in Austin that needs long-term employees. She'll be able to put roots down, grow in her job, and be a vital part of Austin's career ecosystem.
