The project will transform food system through agroecology. The objective is to promote diversified agroecological farming that increase food security, seed sovereignty, preserve biodiversity and traditions through research and empowerment among smallholder farmers. This will be achieved by establishing an agroecological demonstration, training and production farms in Kumbo, Northwest Region and Foumbot West Region of Cameroon.
Our current food systems, directly based on industrial agriculture, are broken: Produce about 1/3 of greenhouse gases, Are responsible for 80% of biodiversity losses, reduce soil fertility, Are vulnerable to climate change, Do not address the triple burden of malnutrition, Maintain social inequity and the loss of cultural values. In response, farmers have resorted to heavy use of chemical fertilizers and environmentally damaging slash-and-burn systems, exacerbating the situation.
I.A.A will establish Agroecology Training Farm to: 1.) Accelerate the transformation of food system through agroecology by facilitating collective action and empowering farmers with capacities needed to drive positive change at all levels. 2.) To provide a platform for farmers to learn and operate agroecological principles coherently as a whole. 3.) To develop and endorse co-learning training and educational resources that can be used in schools, colleges, training institutions and universities.
The project will strengthen local knowledge and development programs to support the agroecological transformation, in particular by promoting local innovation, through a trans-disciplinary and participatory approach between scientists, farmers, indigenous peoples and other stakeholders of the food systems; approximately empowering and supporting over 1000 people from diverse communities, allowing them to create positive change and spread knowledge and resources across generations.
