In Gaza, Many families find it difficult to feed their loved ones due to the economic crisis and 15-year blockade. Anera builds rooftop gardens for families to grow their own healthy produce and feed their families.
With the ongoing blockade of Gaza, families struggle to afford imported goods, feed their families and provide enough nourishment for healthy growth. With a population of over two million people on a little more than 140 square miles of land, Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth. Adequate farming lands are scarce, leaving many families grappling with extreme food insecurity.
With guidance from our team of agricultural experts, Anera equips families with carefully designed rooftop gardens. Here, farmers can grow their own healthy produce to feed their families. Rooftop gardens utilize otherwise unused space in urban areas that generally lack farming land or ample green space. Further, excess produce can be sold and provide an income for families to free up funds for other needs.
Anera's rooftop gardens program is designed to foster food self-sufficiency and combat food insecurity by allowing vulnerable families to cultivate their own seasonal crops. Farming and land cultivation is an essential part of Palestinian identity, owing to the Middle East's rich history of agriculture. This project reconnects Palestinians in Gaza to the land that they proudly celebrate.
