Summary

This project will construct a library addition to an existing school classroom building in northern Uganda. The library will provide a secure place for 650 primary students to access literacy and technology support. The room will provide storage for 1500 books, 3 solar-powered laptop workstations, plus a small storage area . It will also fund the purchase of 100 Uganda textbooks. The school is in northern Uganda in an area that was devastated by a 20 year old civil war that ended in 2006.

Challenge

The Agwata school in northern Uganda has 650 students enrolled, has 18 teachers and 6 support staff. Over 500 library books, suitable for primary students have been donated to the school. However, there is no library and no way for the students to easily access these books. Similarly, the school has 3 laptops, access to solar power, but has no suitable secure space to store or access the laptops. Rats are prevalent can easily destroy the books if they are not securely stored.

Solution

The class building addition will be built to be protected from rodents, weather and theft while providing secure, controlled access by students and teachers. Training will be provided to the students and teachers on how to successfully use both the library and mini technology center. The addition is providing much needed space and helping students to achieve well on the national exams. However, additional funding is needed for textbooks & high capacity solar panels, battery and inverter.

Long-Term Impact

This will provide students with the ability to learn at a higher level and have easy access to books to practice reading in English. In addition, the students will be exposed to technology before they enter secondary school when it becomes a critical skill that they do not have. For teachers, it will be a key resource to help them teach all subjects better, especially English which has been identified as a key deficiency in students from the Lamwo district.
