Many public schools in Northern Nigeria, only have unsafe pit toilets. These conditions are dangerous for girls, especially during menstruation. The lack of safe, private toilets leads to embarrassment, missed school days, and sometimes school dropout. This project will construct 50 separate toilet blocks for girls across selected public schools. Each block will include ventilated cubicles with doors and locks, handwashing stations, and covered sanitary disposal bins.
In many public schools, girls are forced to use open areas, poorly constructed pit toilets, or defecate in nearby bushes. These options are unsafe, unhygienic, and offer no privacy. This discourages girls from attending school regularly, especially during menstruation, and increases the risk of infections and assault. Many girls stay home during their periods because they have no safe or private place to clean themselves or change pads. This results in shame, and in some cases, dropping out.
The project will construct 50 separate toilet blocks for girls in selected public schools across Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States. Each block will include ventilated cubicles with doors and locks, water containers for cleaning, handwashing stations, and sanitary pad banks stocked with reusable and disposable pads. Hygiene education sessions will also be held in each school to teach girls how to use the facilities and manage it effectively.
This project will help more girls stay in school during menstruation and reduce school dropout linked to poor toilet facilities. It will lead to fewer cases of infection and less exposure to unsafe conditions around school toilets. The pad banks and hygiene lessons will also support long-term changes in cleanliness and health habits among students and staff. Girls will be more confident, focused, and able to attend school regularly.
