Bumi Sehat Aceh staff live on-site with their families in the old wooden clinic built after the tsunami. Even now, many families have still not recovered from the losses of homes, belongings and land. Income levels have not recovered. These families need new, secure housing provided as they can't afford to build new houses. The clinic oversees 50 births, 570 prenatal visits and 19,000 individual medical treatments annually. Losing staff would limit services in an underserved area.
Our Bumi Sehat Aceh staff live on site with their families in the old wooden clinic built after the tsunami. This is because, even now, 20 years on, many families have not recovered from their tsunami losses and still can't afford to rebuild their homes. In addition, some of the staff members' land was lost to the sea or destroyed or they are internally displaced and can't return home. Losing staff to relocation means the clinic would have to limit services in an underserved area.
By providing housing for staff and their families, they will be able to live in a secure environment with privacy and a permanent home. This makes working at the clinic more appealing and allows workers to stay permanently. The clinic can continue to offer fully-staffed medical and maternal health services without needing to limit or reduce them.
if staff don't have secure/permanent housing, they may leave for another job which offers housing or try to return home if displaced. The location of the clinic outside the city makes it difficult to find staff. Potential staff may find working at the clinic unappealing if there is only temporary/shared housing. Having permanent housing guarantees staff stability. Bumi Sehat Aceh can continue to serve the thousands of patients who come to our clinic for general care and maternal health services.
