Towards Sustainable Aquaculture in North Kivu

Project Summary

The "Help to Build Sustainable Fish Ponds" project aims to establish a semi-intensive aquaculture system in North Kivu, with an annual fish production target of at least 10 tons. The project includes the construction of four fish ponds, the use of local labor, and the development of a complete supply chain from production to market, tailored to regional conditions. It also leverages readily available local food sources and appropriate infrastructure.

Context and Rationale

North Kivu faces a rising demand for fish, while local supply remains insufficient, threatening food security in the region. At the same time, unemployment levels remain high, especially among youth and rural communities.

This project addresses the urgent need for sustainable economic development and improved living conditions by utilizing local resources and human potential to establish a viable fish farming system.

Project Objectives

  1. Produce at least 10 tons of fish annually through a semi-intensive pond system.
  2. Create direct and indirect employment for youth and local farmers.
  3. Improve food security through a stable supply of locally produced fish.
  4. Stimulate the local economy through a complete aquaculture value chain.
  5. Promote environmentally responsible and sustainable farming practices.

Main Activities

  • Construction of four fish ponds using simple, easily installable infrastructure.
  • Training and technical support for local workers.
  • Establishing a regional distribution network to reach local markets.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of fish production and pond performance.
  • Community awareness campaigns on sustainable fish consumption.

Expected Impact

Short-term:

  • Creation of jobs in the fish farming sector.
  • Increased access to fish for local communities.
  • Local economic stimulation through fish sales and trade.

Long-term:

  • Lasting food security improvements.
  • Reduction of unemployment, especially among youth.
  • Strengthening of local aquaculture skills and capacity.
  • Environmental protection through sustainable practices.
  • Economic empowerment of rural communities.

Total Budget

The total estimated cost of the project is $25,000 USD.
This budget includes the construction of ponds, training sessions, fish feed and fingerlings, basic equipment, logistics, and project monitoring.
