Sustainable Aquaculture for Food Security

1. Background and Project Rationale

The North Kivu province faces a growing demand for animal protein, particularly fish, while local supply remains insufficient. This challenge is compounded by unemployment, poverty, and the long-term effects of armed conflict, which have weakened community livelihoods.

In response, the “Help to Build Sustainable Fish Ponds” project was designed as a practical, sustainable, and locally adapted solution to strengthen food security while creating economic opportunities for vulnerable populations.

2. Overall Project Objective

To establish a semi-intensive pond aquaculture system capable of producing at least 10 tons of fish per year, using local resources, community labor, and environmentally responsible practices.

3. Specific Objectives

Construct four functional fish ponds
Produce quality fish for local markets
Create direct and indirect employment opportunities
Train local learners in sustainable aquaculture techniques
Improve food security and household incomes

4. Project Description

The project will involve the construction of four fish ponds using simple, easy-to-install infrastructure adapted to local conditions. Fish feed will largely rely on locally available resources, reducing costs and ensuring sustainability.

Production will be distributed through local markets using transportation methods suitable for the region. The entire supply chain—from production to sales—will actively involve the local community.

Aidez à construire des étangs à poissons durables

Contexte et justification

Dans la province du Nord-Kivu, la demande en poisson ne cesse de croître, tandis que l'offre locale reste insuffisante pour répondre aux besoins nutritionnels des communautés. Face à ce problème, ce projet de pisciculture semi-intensive a été conçu pour apporter une solution durable, tout en stimulant l'économie locale.

Notre objectif est clair : produire au moins 10 tonnes de poisson par an grâce à un système d’étangs performant, bien structuré et respectueux de l’environnement. Outre le renforcement de la sécurité alimentaire, ce projet vise à créer des emplois , à renforcer les capacités locales et à exploiter durablement les ressources disponibles .

Description du projet

Le projet comprend la construction de quatre étangs piscicoles dans une zone stratégique du Nord-Kivu. L'infrastructure choisie est simple à installer et bien adaptée au contexte rural de la région. Grâce à l' abondance des ressources alimentaires locales (sous-produits agricoles, aliments naturels, etc.), les poissons seront nourris sans dépendre de sources externes coûteuses.

Une chaîne d'approvisionnement complète sera développée, de la production de poisson à sa distribution sur les marchés locaux , grâce à des moyens de transport adaptés aux réalités régionales. Cela permettra non seulement d'assurer un approvisionnement régulier en poisson, mais aussi d'améliorer l'accessibilité pour les populations locales.

Impact communautaire attendu

À court terme, ce projet permettra de :

Mettre en place un système d’aquaculture efficace et productif.
Employer de la main d’œuvre locale pour la construction et la gestion des étangs.
Générer des revenus immédiats pour plusieurs familles.

À long terme, cela aura des effets profonds et durables :

Améliorer considérablement la sécurité alimentaire grâce à un accès régulier aux protéines de poisson locales.
Créer des emplois stables dans les secteurs agricole et commercial.
Renforcer l’économie locale en réduisant la dépendance au poisson importé.
Promouvoir des pratiques agricoles respectueuses de l’environnement .
Renforcer les capacités des communautés locales par la formation et le renforcement des capacités techniques en aquaculture.

Budget et financement

Le coût total du projet est estimé à 25 000 USD . Aucun financement n'a encore été collecté , mais grâce à notre partenariat avec GlobalGiving , nous sommes convaincus que l'objectif sera atteint. Cette plateforme internationale nous permet de mettre en relation notre projet avec des donateurs qui s'intéressent à des causes à fort impact comme celle-ci.

Chaque contribution, quelle que soit son importance, nous rapproche de la concrétisation de ce projet pour des centaines de familles du Nord-Kivu.

Project Summary

The "Help to Build Sustainable Fish Ponds" project aims to establish a semi-intensive aquaculture system in North Kivu, with an annual fish production target of at least 10 tons. Context and Rationale

North Kivu faces a rising demand for fish, while local supply remains insufficient, threatening food security in the region. At the same time, unemployment levels remain high, especially among youth and rural communities.

This project addresses the urgent need for sustainable economic development and improved living conditions by utilizing local resources and human potential to establish a viable fish farming system.
