New Classrooms Done in June: Students Move In!

I've just returned from my June/July trip to Uganda and am very happy to report that construction on the two classrooms was completed in June. The two classes of students (youngest nursery class called "Babies" class and the kindergarteners) were very excited to move into this building. We were very excited to be able to see the students using their new classrooms. We were expecting that there would be 100 students occupying the building, but the enthusiasm for the new building was so much that the Babies class enrollment swelled to 90 students making 135 the total number of students using the new building.

Not only does the new space allow for better learning, and better usage of the preschool materials, but the building's veranda also provides a covered area which is protected from both rain and the harsh midday sun. It is a pleasant spot for the children to take their mid-morning porridge and also their lunch. We also saw that the Babies class regularly used the veranda for "Center" type activities since their classroom is very crowded with tables and chairs.

We've included photos of the Babies class playing with blocks and cars on the veranda plus a view of how their classroom looks with many chairs and tables. The kindergarten class was also very excited for its new space. We saw how much the class enjoyed reading some of the new classroom books, What If the Zebras Lost Their Stripes.

Although the classes have moved into the building, there is still one minor project remaining relative to this project. We hope it can be completed by September.

Construction Under Way for our 5th School Building

We're very excited that construction on our 5th classroom block at the Agwata school began in mid-February and has been progressing quite rapidly. The school parents' were prompt in their provision of the raw materials needed (sand, gravel, bricks). This has enabled construction to proceed smoothly with little interruption. I personally was on site in Agwata during the last half of February and in early March and got to witness the building taking shape. When I left in early March, the timbers for the roof were being put in place.

I'm including several photos that I took of the construction progress when I was there. We have also been able to raise some funds from other sources and so have adjusted the amount of remaining funds needed to complete this project. Even so, it means we still need to raise $1100 of additional funds within the next four to six weeks to complete the building. The installation of the doors and windows, and the final interior finish work including the veranda outside will be time consuming. Completion is still expected before the 2nd term of the school year begins on the 22nd of May.

Our teachers in the youngest nursery class are very excited to have an actual classroom for their almost 80 three year old students! Likewise, the kindergarten teacher is excited about being able to move her children out of the school's tiny storage shed building (which is still an improvement over the mud and thatch class building) next term.

Major Progress in our First 30 Days!

We're quite excited. In our first thirty days of fund-raising for our next school classroom building, we've raised almost $5,300 towards our goal of $7500. Besides that, the Agwata community has been mobilizing to help us with some earthen bricks and also sand and small stones which are needed for the project. December to February are the prime months for the community to provide help. They have some time now between harvest this year's crops and March when they will begin preparations for next year's plantings.

The Ugandan school year begins on February 6 this year. We are still hopeful that the foundation for our next building will be completed before school begins and that significant work can continue during February. Our current $5300 in funds will allow us to begin the building process provided the community has gathered the needed bricks, sand and stones. However, we still need to raise the remaining funds as soon as possible so that building will not stop after the roofing phase but can continue with installation of windows and doors, cement floors and final finishing of the interior and exterior walls.

We are earnestly pursuing securing the additional funding needed and would appreciate any referrals you also may have to help us see this project to completion as soon as possible. The next rainy season begins in mid-April and we hope our newest building can have its roof overhead by that time.

Thank you so much for your support of this project. The entire community and especially the teachers and 100 students who will be using this new building once completed are looking forward to seeing the building process soon beginning. The students are looking forward to doing their writing and lessons on actual tables and desks instead of in their laps or on the dirt floor.
