This project will help an existing northern Uganda clinic better serve the 5000+ people from 5 villages who rely on this remote clinic to serve their health care needs. This clinic needs additional medicines and more staff to better respond to the coronavirus crisis as well as the continued overload of malaria cases during rainy seasons each year.
This small Health Center began in mid-2013 to help serve 5 villages (5000 people) that were very distant from the sub-county's main larger health facility that is 17 kilometers away. This was too far for sick people and pregnant women to walk on foot. The Health Center has been operating with minimal funding since inception. It cannot provide enough medicines during malaria peaks during rainy season. Now, it is facing a pending coronavirus influx of patients with not enough resources.
Funding from this project will be used to purchase clinic medicines and drugs that are most needed during malaria season such as coartem & malaria test strips; plus other antiobiotics, and other supplies such as gloves, masks, liquid soap and disinfectants. Funds will provide additional funding for nursing staff, as well as 1 clinic support staff. Funds will also provide vehicle fuel & service costs so our vehicle can ferry medicine, supplies & staff as needed since the clinic is very remote.
This clinic support will assure that the clinic is able to support the 5000 people in the nearby villages and to handle increased caseloads in cases of higher than normal usage such as during rainy seasons or during a national or worldwide health emergency. This helps OU make sure our education & income-generation programs are not compromised because of severe health issues affecting the people we work with. This also helps us continue to build strong relationships within the Lamwo district.
