This project will build a residential children's home for 75 street/slum children in South Goa, India. There are thousands of children living on the streets in Goa alone for a number of different reasons. Some are orphans, others are runaways who are trying to escape the horrors that surround their daily lives, and others are the children of migrants from poorer states in India who work at construction sites.
The reality for a child on the streets, who is innocent, and often lonely and frightened, is a life of poverty, sickness and exploitation, and great risk of being physically and sexually abused. The problems get compounded if the child is a girl, who might get introduced to the sex trade and not be able to get out of it. Vasco is home to biggest slums in Goa: Zuarinagar, Baina and Varnapuri. This melting pot of humanity has also given rise to the sex trade to which many young women fall prey to.
By opening a new children's home in South Goa, we will be able to care for, support, counsel and accommodate children from streets, especially those belonging to sex workers and other economically marginalised children. We will provid holistic, individualized care and quality of life by providing shelter, housing, nutritional care and support, recreational facilities, medical assistance, formal education, counselling for dignity, self-esteem, respect for others and positive emotional stability.
Establishing a children's home is the need of the hour to see a holistic change in the community. The setting up of this home will see care, protection, and education being given to 75 children for their better future. They will have hope for better future and to dream again. They will be given their childhood.
